Abstract

The oral cavity plays a crucial role in supporting overall human health and well-being. Generally, an individual can be considered healthy not only when their body is in good condition but also when their oral cavity and teeth are well maintained. In general, dental and oral hygiene in elementary school children is very poor due to the lack of education and ability to maintain dental and oral hygiene. Based on initial questionnaire data from 10 students, the average knowledge of students in grades 4A and 4B about brushing their teeth was in the poor category. The issue addressed in this study is the limited knowledge of tooth brushing among 4th-grade students at SDN Kedungdoro V Surabaya. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to evaluate the level of knowledge regarding tooth brushing in these students following counseling sessions that utilized Hippo Dental Dolls as an educational medium.

This research employed a descriptive design involving 50 fourth-grade students at SDN Kedungdoro V Surabaya as respondents. Data were collected using a post-test questionnaire, while the analysis technique involved calculating the mean score of the respondents’ answers. The results were then converted into percentages and presented in tabular form.

The study results indicated an improvement in students’ knowledge concerning the objectives of tooth brushing, correct brushing methods, brushing frequency and timing, along with the proper use of toothpaste and toothbrush selection. This enhancement occurred following counseling sessions that employed the Hippo Dental Doll media, with outcomes classified in the good category. The Hippo Dental Doll functioned as a learning aid during the counseling process, enabling information to be presented in a visual and appealing way for elementary school students).
